Metal Wolf Chaos XD – In search of independence with low quality | Review

Metal Wolf Chaos XD is a game developed by FromSoftware and published by Devolver Digital, released worldwide for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on August 6, 2019.

To fully clarify, Devolver Digital and FromSoftware have stated that the game is neither a remaster nor a remake; they simply improved the audio and updated the look of the game. So initially, I think it's relevant to discuss a little about the original game so you can get more information about its origins and why it's being re-released this year. The original game is titled “Metal Wolf Chaos” and was released exclusively for the Xbox in Japan in 2004. Microsoft had a limited presence in the Japanese market with the Xbox, which led the company to collaborate with FromSoftware in developing this game. At that time, FromSoftware was mainly recognized for the “Armored Core” combat series, while Microsoft, as we all know, is an American company. Therefore, the development team worked to create an environment with American cultural influences. Although the game was only released in Japan, it gained a following in the West due to its striking theme of American patriotism.

Now, approaching the game “Metal Wolf Chaos XD”, this is a title that narrates the plot of the protagonist known as Michael Wilson, whom we embody. He holds the position of 47th elected president of the United States and has special armor that was developed in secret by the US army. Your mission is to seek the restoration of freedom in your country and contain the insurgency promoted by rebel soldiers led by the vice president.

The game is pure chaos from start to finish, but with extremely fragile execution. Opponents appear abruptly like specters and display deplorable artificial intelligence, making the game considerably easier than anticipated. In your special armor, you have several weapons that can be used to defeat your opponents, such as soldiers, tanks, vehicles and towers, among others. Furthermore, there are combos and points that can be obtained during confrontations. Speaking in terms of combat, the game system is quite superficial, leaving a lot to be desired in this aspect.

The narrative is quite captivating, however, in my opinion, its execution leaves a lot to be desired due to less engaging combat, outdated graphics and notable repetition in missions, perhaps due to the age of the game, as the changes were mainly limited to the visual part, without significant adjustments to gameplay and mechanics. The soundtrack follows a similar line to the game's atmosphere and can contribute to a better understanding of the events, but the quality of the sound effects leaves something to be desired.

From my perspective, the fact that the game is just being re-released is not well-received by most players. It would be much more attractive if developers invested their efforts in creating a sequel, a remaster or even a remake, with better graphics, improved combat and other improvements. “Metal Wolf Chaos XD” is a fun game, but full of problems and presents an intriguing narrative.
