As a big fan of Joy Division I couldn't stop watching the movie Control, a film about the life of Ian Curtis, singer of the English post-punk band of the late 1970s, Joy Division. Control was based on the biography Touching from a Distance by Curtis's widow Deborah, who served as a co-producer on the film. Tony Wilson, who released Joy Division records through Factory Records, also served as co-producer.
The film was partly shot on location in Nottingham, Manchester and Macclesfield, including areas where Curtis lived, and was shot in color and then printed in black and white, that's right, the film is all black and white. Its title comes from the Joy Division song “She's Lost Control”, and alludes to the fact that much of the plot deals with the notion that Curtis tried to maintain control of his own life, but had no control over his epilepsy and with the effects medication side effects.

In Control you find a brief passage of Ian Curtis's youth and feel a little in his skin, the film is much more dramatic than that type of film of the emergence of the band from their troubles to their long-awaited success. The story here is told in a direct and straightforward way, the band and its other participants are in the background, sometimes they don't even appear.
Despite Peter Hook, the bassist of Joy Division, not liking Sam Riley's performance as much as Ian Curtis, I really liked his performance in scenes where he's on stage and gives an identical performance to Ian's, but I understand Peter Hook's criticism for coexistence issues, he knows more about Ian than anyone else who never had the opportunity to meet him.
It is a very short film and the little investment made in the production is clear and ends up leaving a void in the story, making you finish watching with a feeling that something was missing from the plot. Control It's super recommended for fans of the band. Joy Division, unlike that you can find a script full of holes, but it is a symbolic film and that leaves the legacy of Ian Curtis more alive than ever.
